Chris Usher

Global Head of AML and Financial Crime Education at BPP Professional Education

Chris has over 20 years’ experience in international financial services, working both in the UK and offshore, for major financial institutions such as Barclays Wealth and Santander.

Formerly an International Investment Manager he advised both individuals and corporate entities on complex investment scenarios. He now specialises in delivering training in investment management, taxation and regulatory matters in international finance centres around the world.

Chris is a specialist chairman of a number of high-profile events, including conferences such as the Annual Compliance & Economic Crime Symposium and the International Taxation Conference. As an expert in the financial crime risks posed to international offshore financial centres, Chris was invited to speak at the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS) conference on the topic of ‘Understanding the Criminal Vulnerabilities of Offshore Products and Services’.

Director at Grata Opus Limited and Former Specialist Operations Detective, Financial Investigator and Trainer for the National Terrorist Financial Investigation Unit (NTFIU)

Ross is a former Specialist Operations Detective, Financial Investigator and Trainer from the National Terrorist Financial Investigation Unit (NTFIU), which is part of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), Counter Terrorism Command (CTC).

Ross joined the MPS in 2002, becoming a Detective in 2004. In 2007, he became an Accredited FI focusing on conducting money laundering investigations and stripping the assets of criminals in West London.

In 2009, Ross moved to New Scotland Yard, joining the NTFIU. Ross worked as part of a highly specialised team, providing financial intelligence and investigatory support to UK and International Counter Terrorism operations, working closely with government and industry partners.

Between 2013-15, Ross became the NTFIU Liaison Officer to the Ministry of Defence, travelling to Afghanistan to provide specialist CFT support to coalition efforts against the Taliban.

Ross now offers a CFT/AML consultancy service to the international private and public sectors, incorporating bespoke training and investigatory services.

Mathew Cook

Counsel at Mourant

Mathew acts on a wide range of high-profile multi-jurisdictional banking, corporate, funds, financial crime, trust and property disputes. He also has experience in contentious employment matters and insolvency.

Mathew has a particular focus on regulatory work, encompassing advisory work to regulated entities in the trust, banking and funds sectors and contentious regulatory matters. He regularly advises on compliance with the local regulatory regime, anti-money laundering legislation (including reporting obligations), data protection issues and sanction compliance.

Mathew has extensive experience in data protection matters, and is part of a team of specialists advising businesses on ensuring compliance with the new data protection laws implemented to meet the standards required by the General Data Protection Regulation.
