Learning and Development plays a pivotal role in ensuring that financial services organisations retain the best talent in a fast-paced and competitive business environment. This forum will focus on the evolving nature of L&D, discussing how human resources practitioners can develop their employees into future leaders.

Organisations are finding that they need to take differing approaches when engaging with Generations X, Y and Z employees and understanding how best to manage this can be complex and demanding. Effectively developing employees across all of these spectrums can be challenging but it is essential if firms are to succeed in the race to win and retain talent.

Chris Usher

Managing Director (Jersey) of BPP CI

Chris has over 20 years’ experience in international financial services, working both in the UK and offshore, for major financial institutions such as Barclays Wealth and Santander.

Formerly an International Investment Manager he advised both individuals and corporate entities on complex investment scenarios. He now specialises in delivering training in investment management, taxation and regulatory matters in international finance centres around the world.

Chris is a specialist chairman of a number of high-profile events, including conferences such as the Annual Compliance & Economic Crime Symposium and the International Taxation Conference. As an expert in the financial crime risks posed to international offshore financial centres, Chris was invited to speak at the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS) conference on the topic of ‘Understanding the Criminal Vulnerabilities of Offshore Products and Services’.

Nina Gomes

Senior Manager, Learning and Development at Crestbridge Limited

Nina currently works at Crestbridge where she draws on her 22 years in the finance industry, in both client-facing roles as well as a tutor, to deliver pertinent training, guidance and support to the employees of Crestbridge to help them achieve their career aspirations. Previously, she gained 18 years’ experience in client-facing roles, where she delivered administrative services to UHNW clients. Nina also gained three years’ experience working at BPP Professional Education during which time she was Head of Fiduciary as well as the ICSA Programme Manager.

Matt Ebbrell

Director of Human Resources at Fairway Group

Matt Ebbrell is HR Director at Fairway Group with responsibility for the people strategy in the Human Resources team. Matt joined Fairway in 2018 and has over 18 years' experience in HR. Prior to joining Fairway Group, he worked at HSBC, Royal Bank of Canada and most recently at the Jersey Financial Services Commission as Head of Human Resources focusing on transformation of the people strategy.

Matt graduated from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) with a Level 7 Post Graduate Diploma in Human Resources. He is a fully Chartered member of the CIPD.

Sue Beavil

Head of Learning at Mourant

As Head of Learning for Mourant, Sue's focus is on giving people the opportunity to develop and enhance skills and knowledge needed in order to build and enjoy fulfilling careers whilst also contributing to the success of the business.

Sue has worked in the professional services sector for 30 years, always in learning-, professional development- and organisational development-related roles.

She will be sharing her reflections on what the future may hold for L&D in professional services, based on her experience of the changes that have and are taking place from an L&D perspective.

Ben Phelps

Senior Manager at JTC Academy

Ben has over 20 years’ human resources experience gained across different business sectors. He is currently responsible for delivering the learning strategy for the JTC Group and implementing associated activities via the ‘JTC Academy’. Ben started his career in the manufacturing world, working in recruitment, payroll and other central HR functions before specialising in learning & development, where he then managed a large variety of learning projects with clients across Europe. Ben has held management roles at Xerox, BHP Billiton, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), HSBC, and Ogier before joining JTC.
